On Visions and Being Human
I like to take this opportunity to introduce you to the writings and art of my good friend Bruce Rimell.
I also publish a website called VISIONARY ART EXHIBITION. While we were both showing at the Dreams & Divinities Exhibition in Mexico where Bruce also gave a lecture, we talked about Bruce sharing his thoughts to a wider audience and I offered for him to blog on the VA Exhibition site. Since April 2014, Bruce had posted many great topics, of which the latest is On Visions and Being Human.
In his September introduction to this series, he writes:
"In one of my first posts on this blog, I mentioned that one of my writing projects, entitled 'On Vision', would eventually be featured here on 'Archaic Visions'. In the ensuing period, the remit of this writing project has rather expanded, and thus is now called 'On Vision and Being Human' to reflect the wider purview - Darwinist, neurological, cognitive - that I am taking in my quest to come to a new understanding of the nature of visionary experience. As I write, this essay stands at some 45,000 words with a few more sections still to write, and as such, the serialisation here will likely last a long time! Eventually, an illustrated book is planned... For now, however, here is the introduction to the thesis, which I hope will whet your appetite for further reading."
Since then, he continued with parts 1, 2 and 3 in October. The next installation however had to wait until December, since he was ill for a period of time.
After a bit of a hiatus, on Bruce Rimell's ARCHAIC VISIONS blog, a new installment of his treatise on visionary experience, ON VISION AND BEING HUMAN. Here is painted a rough sketch of image of the ubiquitous human experience of hidden realms and visionary worlds held to exist beyond mundane reality, and the transmission of this idea down the centuries.
Forthcoming posts will resume normal service, with features on mythical images of emergence, the Bird Man of Lascaux and the complex beliefs behind Wandjina rock art figures in Australia, as well as regular installments of the treatise. Enjoy!
